Salvage vs Recovery

Salvage can sometimes be mixed up with ‘search and recovery’ services. It is important to know which service you truly need. Salvage is classified as the rescue of a vessel, it’s crew of its cargo from a disastrous scenario; while search & recovery is the act of finding and recovering a possession (be it a whole ship or a small item) that has been lost.

There are different classifications of salvage services. Afloat Salvage is the process of helping remove excess water that is overtaking a boat. Offshore salvage is categorized as the re-floating of a ship that has sunk (or is sinking) in open waters.

Most Popular Questions We Get Asked

FAQ's

?
How quickly do you respond to a boat salvage emergency?

Response time depends on location, weather conditions, water access, and the severity of the incident, but rapid response is critical in minimizing additional damage and environmental impact. We try our best to prioritize salvage efforts as fast action can help stabilize the vessel before conditions worsen or water intrusion spreads further into critical systems.

?
What types of boats can be salvaged?

Many different vessel types can be salvaged, including recreational boats, sailboats, fishing vessels, pontoons, yachts, and some commercial vessels. Salvage methods vary depending on vessel size, location, water depth, damage severity, and whether the vessel is partially or fully submerged.

?
Can a sunken boat be salvaged?

Yes. Many sunken boats can be successfully salvaged depending on the condition of the vessel, water depth, structural integrity, and surrounding environmental conditions. Our professional salvage divers use specialized equipment and recovery techniques to safely stabilize and recover submerged vessels whenever possible.

?
Can a boat be too damaged to salvage?

In some cases, a vessel may be too severely damaged, structurally compromised, or environmentally hazardous to make a full salvage practical or cost effective. The extent of flooding, collision damage, fire damage, or prolonged submersion can all affect salvage viability. However, getting any boat debris out of the waterway is always a priority, regardless of the degree of severity.

?
Can you refloat a partially sunk boat without hauling it out?

Yes. Many partially submerged boats can be stabilized and refloated in the water using pumps, lift bags, containment methods, and controlled recovery procedures without immediately hauling the vessel out. The recovery approach depends on vessel condition, location, and water access.

?
How does the boat salvage process work?

Boat salvage typically begins with an underwater assessment to evaluate vessel condition, water intrusion, environmental concerns, and recovery risks. Divers then develop a recovery plan that may include dewatering, patching leaks, rigging lift equipment, stabilizing the vessel, and coordinating towing or haul-out operations depending on the situation.

?
Will my boat be damaged further during salvage?

Professional salvage operations are designed to minimize additional damage whenever possible, although existing structural issues, flooding, or unstable conditions can sometimes create unavoidable risks during recovery. Proper salvage techniques and experienced divers help reduce the likelihood of further complications.

?
Can you perform salvage in marinas or tight dock spaces?

Yes. Salvage operations are actually often performed in marinas, slips, canals, and confined dock spaces where access may be limited. Tight working conditions require careful planning, specialized equipment, and experienced divers to safely recover the vessel without damaging nearby boats or structures.

?
Do you work with insurance companies for boat salvage?

Yes. Ds-Diving will help coordinate with marine insurance providers, surveyors, marinas, and recovery personnel during salvage operations. Proper documentation and communication can help streamline the claims and recovery process.

?
How much does boat salvage cost?

Boat salvage costs vary significantly depending on vessel size, water depth, accessibility, environmental conditions, extent of damage, equipment required, and the complexity of the recovery operation. Emergency response situations and heavily submerged vessels typically require more extensive resources and planning.

?
How long does a boat salvage operation take?

The duration of a salvage operation depends on vessel condition, location, weather, water depth, environmental concerns, and the complexity of the recovery process. Some recoveries can be completed relatively quickly, while larger or heavily damaged vessels may require multiple phases of stabilization and removal.

?
Do you provide documentation or visuals of the salvage process?

Yes. Photo and video documentation are always provided during salvage operations to document vessel condition, recovery progress, insurance requirements, and underwater findings. Our visual documentation helps owners better understand the extent of damage and recovery procedures performed.
